Jamila S. Maxie is a followership and management researcher with over 18 years of experience in academe that includes recruitment/enrollment management, academic advising, student activities/affairs, and test administration. Several of her passions are reflective in the degrees and certificates she has earned: Writing – Bachelor of Arts in Journalism (emphasis in Public Relations, Marketing minor; honor graduate), Education – Masters of Arts in Higher Education Administration, Business – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (summa cum laude) and Leadership - graduate certificate in Organizational Leadership. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Management – Organizational Behavior and Human Resources. Her research focuses on followership, leader/follower identity and top leadership team turnover. Before entering higher education, her professional experience included financial marketing and customer service. In 2016, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to found Vision 20/20 Creative Group, a strategy consulting agency.
With a passion for leadership and giving back, she volunteers her time as the Assistant Director for the AABHE Leadership and Mentoring Institute (LMI), a national professional development experience for African Americans in higher education to enhance their leadership capacities and improve their opportunities for advancement in higher education. She previously served as the inaugural LMI Fellow from 2013-2015. Additionally, she is a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, Sigma Tau Delta honor society, the Academy of Management (AOM) where she currently serves as one of six Graduate Student Representatives for the Human Resources Division, Management Doctoral Student Association (through the Ph.D. Project), and the Southern Management Association (SMA). Previously she served on the Governing Council Board and as the Divisional Chair for Membership Engagement for the National Collegiate Testing Association (NCTA).
Aside from her professional pursuits, Jamila enjoys volunteering and previously served as a volunteer with the KBSJ Prayer Initiatives and the Houston Food Bank. Additionally, she served as one the Superstar Volunteers for the events leading up to Super Bowl LI. Jamila is originally from Shreveport, Louisiana and loves visiting Civil Rights & Holocaust museums throughout the US.
